for all the world's a stage - LIBRARY LOG

Who: The Editors
What: The Library changes once again...
When: January 9- January 22
Where: The Library
Content warnings: Please put them in the comment headers!

The Assistants have vanished into their backroom once again, leaving only the increasingly unbelievable “Back In 5” sign on the Help Desk, but at least they have attempted to impart some knowledge on the Editors before departing (or… attempted to do anything but, depending who you ask). The customary tea cart with drinks and increasingly stale biscuits is parked in its usual spot, though it seems that the quality of the tea at least has improved some. (Still waiting on coffee improvement.)

There’s a new crafting setup in the Maker Space, a table with an iron and machine for making vinyl designs, along with the instructions on how to use it, and a stack of t-shirts in various sizes. Usually there’s something in the correct size, but, well, mistakes happen. While this addition to clothing is a boon, there is the problem that the t-shirts can’t be taken out of the room until some sort of design is put on them. Get creative! Show off your style! Or maybe just steal one of the shirts that are there for display purposes. It’s fine, the Library can make more.

In the second week as the Library begins to change once more, the Lobby’s wooden floor shines with extra polish. The walls make an odd creaking sound as they shift, warping into brick covered with velvet drapings in a rich, dark red. Gold thread twinkles in the stitches, a sense of opulence woven through. The sound of ballroom music drifts by and, while in the Lobby, characters will be taken by the unusual impulse to dance.

Outside, in the Garden, the day/night cycle has paused firmly on a cloudless night. A full moon hangs in the air - literally. About the size of a basketball, it follows the first person who enters the Garden; hovering a couple of meters above their head. A white aura spreads from them, powered by the moon, and those who are caught in its light will find themselves unable to speak anything but the truth.

When the person to whom the moon is attached leaves the garden, the moon and its aura will leave them; and the moon will attach to the next person to enter instead.

On the circulation desk, there is a sign: “This Week’s Recommended Reading: Twilight!” The accompanying sign up sheet waits next to it for those wishing to check it out- though some will receive the movie instead of the book, with no particular rhyme or reason to it. Periodically someone might also receive something else entirely. Whoops? The Assistants at least will fix that quickly. Richard will be embarrassed, while Phillip will be trying not to cackle.

While not advertised, various iterations of different stories will be available throughout the Library. In particular, someone seems to have left the projector in one of the meeting rooms running, with a variety of different recorded plays. These range from professional productions, to parodies, to what appear to be high schoolers (of which one production features a sixteen year old version of Phillip running around being an absolutely nuisance.

1 - shirt get

Clothing. Clothing is helpful, as, while Kai's clothes are meant to be reworn more than their modern variants, they are still going to wear out eventually. And being able to change into literally anything else would be great. So when the shirts are available, he's obviously going to take one.

Once he realizes that they won't leave the room unless they've been modified in some way, he's just... grabbing some of the markers and doodling a design on it. It likes random lines to most people. People with magic might be able to tell it's a cantrip of some kind.

2 - Reading

Kai manages to get himself a copy of the Recommended Reading- it's clearer now that it was before that they hold some sort of hint to what's coming, and he wants to be as prepared as possible. This, though... he's not entirely sure what he should be taking out of this.

He's curled up in a chair, frowning as he flips through it, and nothing seems to make his expression clearer. "...I have no idea who this is for," he admits after a while. The Arike love their romantic epics, but this seems almost... childish, for that? While also being kind of horrible.

3 - The Play's the Thing

Since the projector seems to be playing on its own, Kai will watch a few of the performances as well. He remembers what video is well enough from his time as a Kloax, but it's interesting to watch it as himself, in what is clearly just a recorded play. The problem is he can't tell why the Library is showing all of this off, and unfortunately, he's pretty sure it's important.

"These are by the same author, it sounds like," he mentions to whomever might be watching with him, when he gets tired of trying to unpick meaning from the archaic sounding language, "It's mentioned in the beginning of most of them. But otherwise they're pretty different. Could what's coming have something to do with him?"

Reading

"I will admit, I am also..." She hums, and marks the book carefully with a bit of cardboard, and hums again. "It's slightly interesting, in that it's playing with pop culture horror elements, and I suppose there's an inherent tension in the interplay of a human and the monsters who want each other, but..."

She's drawn up a short relationship chart as she goes. There's Bella, right in the center, as one might expect. "This is the first novel's relationship map."

It should be noted she has drawn an arrow from Edward to Bella that reads 'The Greatest Sandwich' and a return arrow saying 'spooky allure?', Arrows between Edward and James that say 'rival clans', and other such things.

Hikaru raises an eyebrow at the performances.

At this point, he's wearing pixie-sized jeans, an orange windbreaker with blue highlights and wing-slats, and a grey t-shirt with stamp of a green shield with a heraldic rose limned in gold on it and a scroll reading TEAM EDMUND.

Also, a deeply concerned expression.

"...these are all by the same author, one from my Earth, yes," Hikaru ventures. "I recognize some of them. My friend Jericho played as Puck in a college performance: I was Oberon, and my friend Zoe was Helena."

He frowns at his copy of Twilight.

"The very concerning thing is that between something very much like Luna Ascendant, Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream, most of them have romance in common and all of them conspiracy."

1: A Shirt That's The Perfect Solution

Mei plays around with the vinyl press; hums, and then starts to design. It looks like a particular kind of mask; reminiscent of a cicada, but also formed of elements of various plastic models... She makes sure to use the shirt's primary color as a way to differentiate.

In block letters is BEST REACTION. That one done, she starts on a completely different design. She'll let others have a turn, especially because she's designing them one by one, but her toku rampage remains unabated.

2- Shakespeare
She'll give the Library this-- she's not above a little drama. In fact, she's in the projector room, loudly going between roles as she swaps wildly from one side of the stage to the other.

Why she's doing this, and not, say, asking someone else to help her cold read it, is a good goddamned question.

"Is that Kikkaiser Nano?" Sio says, with wide blue eyes. "I love Kikkaiser Nano! Hikaru showed it to me during the last Story, when he was a youth."

"ah--! Yes! I've loved quite a few tokusatsu series. Admittedly, I usually have a soft spot for the villains and side characters, instead." See also: the print she's working on, which is an image of one of the stage-play only villains of Healing Bishoujo AuPair, the one who's half delinquent getup, half monster-girl, all dark and evil-like.

"I still have the sheet loaded if you want a copy of the Nano one."

"Two copies, maybe?" she asks. "So we can give Hikaru one. I'd like to surprise him with it, especially since he gave me an Ad Astra uniform for when I'm in andr-- human form."

"Two copies, you got it." She looks at Sio, recalls Hikaru, gets the small shirts, sets up the shirt on the target, and uses the red vinyl on a blue shirt, then a vivid white for the text. Pull up, hang to dry, repeat. It's overall pretty fast, once you already have the shirt and print ready to go.

If a character becomes fed up enough with the moon to try to knock it away somehow, say with a high jump and volleyball spike or a freakishly long abdominal tongue that has a longer reach than two meters, what happens?

Also...is the moon a rock or is it cheese.

THE MOON! THE MOON

Sanguinius gives a resigned huff at the moon, as it slowly moves into place beside him. Another drone, tagging along, and suspiciously close. This one, he had not agreed to. Therefore: This one was clearly spying.

On what? Who knows. But he's brought his copy of the reading, some book called Fifty Shades of Grey, because he is determined to do a better job interpreting the clues than he did last time. That was...you know? He's still not ready to talk about it. It was not good, and very close to the opposite of good. He still hasn't worked out if it was warp contagion, or something else that made him vulnerable while Curze had been unscathed and he hasn't even come close to untangling the other whole mess of being a xenos. Not only does he have the novel, he has raided the Librarian's desk and has notecards and sticky notes. If this goes like last time, he is determined to be prepared.

If anyone approaches, of course he's going to ask if they've read it, or what they thought of it. Impromptu truth-moon book club, anyone?

It's like a game of Clue: Mr Angel in the Library with the Book
He's been practicing at getting his, er, special dietary needs from books, and is currently sitting in the War Memoirs section, flipping through titles, till he finds a promising one. Books like these, for some reason, fall open at the parts he needs, the same way the Fifty Shades book, uh, also just fell open to key scenes. (Someone protect his innocence!)

It's still practice so he has some implements in case he needs them, because it doesn't always work out like he thinks it will (again, just like that Fifty Shades book, Holy Terra!) and there's a loud *pop* and then suddenly.

Oh no.

That's...that's a dead body. The face is weirdly blank but it certainly sure is a dead body.

Soon she is joined in soliloquy:

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts."

He laughs, and takes his bow.

"Ahhh, college drama courses. Good memories, these."

Shirt Struggles

Jun is glad there's some tshirts around, and he considers what to draw. It takes a few test sketches, but he finally settles on the outline of a dolphin pressed onto a black shirt. That said, refining the design will take some time, so it's not like he's going anywhere fast.

He has no idea what this 'Edward' or 'Jacob' thing is, but it's probably not important. He doesn't really care enough.

Moon Viewing

He likes spending time in the garden - as long as no one else is around. The moon around his head is annoying and in his eyes, but he can manage. He's just lying down in the grass, looking at the plants and just... thinking. Wondering about the others. Were they taken to places like this, too?

... And what about the people who lost? It would be nice if they went somewhere... though he's still pretty sure that after death is nothing. It doesn't make sense for anything to be other than that.

Book Looks

He hates this immediately. He starts trying to read the book, but fiction isn't his genre. Once he realizes this is romance fiction - supernatural romance fiction, from a girl's perspective - it's all he can do to not throw the book across the stacks.

The book gets dropped off at the circulation desk with a firm slam - not enough to damage it, but enough to get the point across that he's extremely unhappy. He can be found near the desk, sulking in the stacks with a dark look on his face.

The loss of Machi is still fresh. He can still see her -

He grits his teeth and starts speaking loudly as he looks towards the desk. It's not quite a yell, but he's definitely not being quiet. "You're assholes. You're rude and this isn't funny!"

"Ah-- Aozora. I'd heard that the plays only made sense spoken aloud in the proper manner, and so..." Well, honestly, she'd set it up at least partly as a bit, but she wasn't going to tell him that, not while she's got him in the initial strings of it.

"I begin to see what they mean, though it's a little tough to get all the stage positions correct."

"Oh, the blocking can be tricky, but with Shakespeare in particular the real problem is that it's Early Modern English, and definitions slip. These plays for all their insight are at least 80% bawdy humor by volume. He's responsible for the first recorded 'yo mama' joke in English, you know?"

His grin is mischievous. "Villain, thou hast undone my mother!" he says, then in a different, deeper, disdainful voice: "Knave, I have done thy mother."

"Hey."

Claire's voice isn't accusatory or angry, but it is deeply serious.

"There is clearly more going on here than your being annoyed with a trashy romance," she says. "It was absolutely not laser-targeted at you... even if it feels like it, cause it clearly must. So... what's going on?"

Oh, yes, she can hear the music in that shirt thrumming low. In what key, in what color?

"Interesting trick," she says of it.

Claire herself is stamping a few with the insignia of her band, a spraypainted gloved fist holding a winged and jeweled microphone, with a stenciled MAGICA RIOT on it.

Okay now she breaks out laughing, and then, briefly, looks like she just ate a sour lemon. "... Yeah, all right, I can see it. I better sit down with this, then."

She knows when she's been beat on the field of 'who will crack first'. ... For now. "... And steal all the material."

Siobhan watches in fascination.

"We'll want one with TEAM EDMUND and it should have a shield that has a rose on it," Siobhan says, tapping her mouth thoughtfully. "The other should be TEAM KONRAD and its shield should have a fish on it. And I should like pixie-sized ones for the TEAM EDMUND shirt, but not TEAM KONRAD."

"Hm... I'll have to cut up both escutcheons, since they'll be stencilled..." Still, that's not too bad. Some time with a cutting knife should do it... And, if nothing else, Mei can have a steady hand whenever she likes. One might say it's steady as iron.
