Careful of the stacks - LIBRARY LOG

Who: EVERYONE!
What: A bunch of Editors walk into a library...
When: October 31st - November 13
Where: The Unfinished Library
Content warnings: Please add them as needed in the comment titles!

Welcome to the Library, Editors.

As the new residents drop into the Library, they are bound to have questions. Unfortunately it seems no one (except perhaps someone on the phone) appears to have any answers. But there is a nice little cart with a carafe of too weak coffee, a pot of too strong tea, assorted creams and sugar packets, and what appear to be leftover boxed shortbread cookies. There’s a sign inviting people to help themselves but reminding them not to take any food or drinks into the stacks, or touch any of the books with their grubby cookie hands. But aside from this little display and the nametags they’re all given, which do reappear whenever removed for the first week (where do they keep coming from?), the Editors are more or less left alone.

The Library is eternal, or at least it seems that way, unbothered by its new inhabitants. It certainly does not seem like this is anything unusual within its operation. Are there other sections of the Library with Editors, tucked into a different part of the stacks? Have there been Editors here before, and the ones here are simply a replacement? It’s impossible to say, just that the Library seems quite prepared for them. The refrigerators are stocked with appropriate (if generic) foodstuffs, any tantrums in front of the circulation desk are completely ignored, and attempts to set the Library on fire fizzle out before anything can even catch.

However, after a few days, some of the scenery in the Library seems to be changing. Little singing bowls and white noise makers pop up on various shelves and counters, yoga mats appear tucked under the bunk beds (plenty for everyone, somehow), and some of the rooms have started playing relaxing, meditative music over unseen speakers. More confusingly, there are also small UFOs hanging by string from the lower ceilings of the contained rooms, which on closer reflection are revealed to simply be two paper plates glued together and painted silver. In the beginning they’re quite sparse, but by the end of the second week they are everywhere and impossible to ignore.

At the start of the second week, there is a possible hint as to why, for at least part of it. On the table by the circulation desk there is a sign: “This Week’s Recommended Reading: Invasion of the Body Snatchers!” Next to it, there is a sign up sheet: a waitlist to check-out the ‘reading.’ (There is no explanation or apology for it actually being a movie.)

[ooc note: The Library prompts from the TDM can be considered canon to the game. Remember any of the locations listed in the setting are fair game. Have fun!]

"What on Earth are you doing?" Mina exclaims when she smells the burning meat and quickly discerns what just happened. "Here, we'll need a damp cloth..."

Does she know basic first aid? Of course! What kind of Victorian housewife would she be if she didn't know how to deal with a minor burn? She quickly soaks a cloth in cool water and approaches the stranger, used enough now to people with unusual appearances to set aside any of that in favor of assistance.

"The warning implied it would explode."

That's what Illarion was doing: Trying to blow up the microwave, rather than the far more disappointing result he got. The spoon -- no longer scorching -- he sets aside, turning to watch the woman hurry after a rag and water. Solicitous as a first-time father with his infant, and all for a stranger? That's ... something.

Enough of something -- enough of unexpected kindness -- that he puts out his injured hand at her approach. It doesn't look blistered the way healthy living flesh would; it really does look cooked, as a piece of butchered meat held against a grill.

Fitting, given he's about as lively as butchered meat, and not breathing any more than it would be.

Quietly, he remarks, "Not much water will do for me."

subjecting her to every undead character for the lols

"And so you attempted it?"

Mina cannot comprehend why anyone would do such a thing. Still, he's clearly been hurt, and...

She stares at the wound, and before she can even catch herself, says, "My God, what are you?"

Then she immediately realizes what she just said, and clears her throat, pressing the cloth to his skin. "Apologies. My manners aren't always what they ought to be. I was only startled."

as one should (poor girl!)

"Yes."

Illarion did have his reasons for doing so, but she hadn't asked why, only that he'd done it. An explanation could wait until it was requested.

He had been looking at his own hand, contemplating the texture of the injury and what he might need to do to repair it, but his gaze snaps up at her surprised question. He looks at her only briefly -- he needs a veil; why hasn't he bothered making one yet? -- before shifting his gold-in-black gaze to a safer target. That wall over there.

Back home, the scent of sea water -- of tears -- that followed him would've been a dead giveaway to his nature, which goes further to show he may be entirely alone here. (Stars and Saints forfend.)

"An elf," he answers. And: "One of the Unearthed dead.

"No apologies needed." For he was certainly unapologetic about his own nature -- though it's not as if he's had any opportunity before now to contemplate what effect that nature would have on the living around him. If he isn't any longer at active war with them.

Very quietly, he adds, "Perhaps I should apologize."
starandhope: (026)

she is doing her best!

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-13 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
He really doesn't look anything like her mental image of an elf, but she'll let that slide for the moment.

"I'm becoming concerned by the number of people here claiming to be dead," she remarks after a moment's thought. But that's more of a rhetorical statement.

"You owe me no apology. Except, perhaps, for trying to make the microwave explode. You could have injured more than just yourself, you know."
unsheathedfromreality: (my companions in this escapade)

she is, and i love her

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-13 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Rhetorical statement it might be, it gets the tiniest twitch of a smile out of him. Reflex, almost. "'Claiming'," he echoes, and echoes, his voice for a moment sounding like he's at the bottom of a well and not right next to her. "As if there's benefit to do so."

If there were more elven warmth in his tone that would come off more like teasing, rather than a bland statement of fact.

"Yes." He knows. If he is fully truthful with himself, he didn't really care, though -- "That is why I waited to try it alone."
starandhope: (006)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-13 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s uncanny, that echo - and really, he has a point. Mina can’t suppress a shudder, however.

“For better or worse, it’s nearly impossible to find oneself alone here,” she says quietly. “Even the sleeping quarters are communal.”

A point which she is still salty about.
unsheathedfromreality: (as the darkness closes in again)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
He lifts his uninjured hand, touching it to his chest as if acknowledging a point scored on him. Thinking enough ahead to avoid anyone being immediately in the room didn't excuse him from not considering the possibility of someone coming to join him.

So it went with his mad impulses.

"You object to that?" No condemnation (or much of anything) is in the question. Illarion, of course, has the luxury of not needing sleep.
starandhope: (006)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-14 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
"It's improper," Mina says. "For unmarried, unrelated men and women to share sleeping quarters."

She's had to explain this several times at this point, and she still doesn't understand why so many people need it explained! But she's not angry with him, merely resigned to the explanation.

"My apologies, I find myself forgetting my manners here quite often. I am Mina Harker." She gestures to the injured hand. "Will it - heal?"
unsheathedfromreality: (as the darkness closes in again)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-14 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. One of the more common taboos, then -- but he had not wanted to assume. "Forgive a soldier his callousness for asking. The dead don't worry over propriety."

There was little point. Or violating anyone's notions of decency and morality was the point, seen from another angle.

He lifts his chin as she introduces herself, then places his whole hand to his chest -- over his heart -- to offer her an abbreviated bow. "Well met, Mina Harker."

And -- while ordinarily he would not need to explain this next, or would not bother -- her own manners have woken some polished civilized echo in him, so he adds: "It is my people's custom not to share our names on first meeting."

Stars and saints be thanked the name tag had finally left him alone a day or so ago.

"It will heal, with proper feeding. Even without, it doesn't impair me." Which was the really important thing, among the Unearthed -- to not be weak. Pain didn't matter.
starandhope: (014)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-14 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, I suppose they wouldn't," Mina murmurs, almost to herself. Not caring about propriety tracks with what little she knows of undead in her own world, certainly Dracula didn't care about murdering an innocent young woman.

She studies him a moment longer, and offers up, "in that case, what would you like me to call you, sir?"

She'll get to the "feeding" thing in a moment. Manners, first!
unsheathedfromreality: (my companions in this escapade)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-16 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Whatever you choose to call me, I will answer to," Illarion replies, courteously. "Even if it's only 'sir'."

A practice that could be subject to abuse, but so went many customs.
starandhope: (027)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-16 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Very well," Mina says. She'll just call him 'sir', then. At least, for the moment, he's the only person she's met who hasn't provided her with a name, so he's unique. It would only be a problem if a lot of people were doing it.

"May I ask why you were attempting to explode the micro-wave?" she asks, her tone curious rather than accusatory as she moves about the small kitchen, tidying up. Some of the people here aren't good at cleaning up after themselves. And her pronounciation of "microwave" suggests it's not a word she usually says.
unsheathedfromreality: (as the darkness closes in again)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"The instructions suggested it would happen, without explaining the mechanism. I wanted to see it." Was it a good reason? Absolutely not, but it was Illarion's reason. "An explosion couldn't hurt me permanently."

And the Library itself appeared to resist damage, so the risks seemed minimal.

He shifts his gaze back to the microwave, adding thoughtfully, "Now I have questions about the other instructions.

"Do they have them, on the world you're from?"
starandhope: (026)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-21 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"You wanted to see an explosion."

Mina blinks at him, then shakes her head.

"No, my world is very technologically advanced, but we don't have such machines," she adds. "This place is a strange one. Sometimes, it provides me with exactly what I am familiar with from home, and sometimes it offers up - things like that."
unsheathedfromreality: (though i feel)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-21 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
A hint of a smile tugs at one side of Illarion's mouth. "That particular explosion," he clarifies. "To understand why it happened."

It's splitting hairs, but it was an old habit of his to be precise about his motives. One he'd had cause to fall out of, in recent years, but since he's free...

He gives an absent nod to her answer. "Much the same. Some of this," he gestures around him, "is only a step beyond what I'm used to. Some, I see the principles it came from." Others -- well, he doesn't need to repeat that they're completely unexpected.

"Are the natural laws of this place like what you knew at home?"

Odd question, maybe. But it's been bothering him how unlike Nephele that is.
starandhope: (026)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-22 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Not in the slightest," Mina says. "Or at least, I don't think so. I've certainly never encountered a seemingly never-ending library that magically changes itself at random."

She glances at him, taking in his strange appearance. "Though, I'd recently discovered there are dark powers at work in my world that I hadn't previously thought possible. So I don't suppose I can be entirely sure."
unsheathedfromreality: (Default)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-22 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah." That very faint smile is back, there and gone again into a corpselike stillness. "Nor I, but it's at least possible with what we know of the world."

He returns the glance, very careful not to meet her eyes directly. "Dark powers?" he inquires -- that seems worth pursuing.
starandhope: (018)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-22 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Vampires," she says simply. "Un-dead monsters who feed on the blood of the living. One has been stalking my loved ones for weeks now. I'm afraid I was brought here just as the hunt was beginning in earnest, and I left my husband in deadly peril."
unsheathedfromreality: (and realize i know nothing)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-25 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
That gets a more marked reaction out of Illarion -- he cocks his head with avian abruptness, regarding her out of the corner of his eyes. "You have vampires as well?" he asks. "Do you also have elves, then?"

Since they were creatures born of dead eggs, back on Nephele -- though there's no reason that had to be preserved across worlds, was there.
starandhope: (013)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-25 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone else who knows of vampires! Mina’s eyes widen at that - and then her face falls a bit at his follow-up.

“Elves? I don’t believe so,” she says. “But six months ago I would’ve said the same of Un-dead.”
unsheathedfromreality: (though i feel)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-25 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, that faint quicksilver smile. Both for that momentary widening of the eyes -- that indication of fellow-feeling -- and her admission of ignorance about elves.

"It is possible you haven't met them. We are good at not being seen if we don't wish it.

"So your vampires are -- what, born of human mothers? Or is there some other method of making them?"
starandhope: (026)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-27 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
"No, they're made from other vampires," Mina says, frowning faintly. "Professor Van Helsing described it as an infection. They infect their victim, and when the victim dies, they become a vampire too."
unsheathedfromreality: (and realize i know nothing)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-11-27 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
"An infection -- like rabies?" A horror for humans and other mammals, that elves (Saints and Stars be praised) had never suffered. "How did the first one contract it?"
starandhope: (026)

[personal profile] starandhope 2025-11-29 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
That is how Van Helsing spoke of it, anyway. A disease, but rather than having an Earthly, scientific origin, it comes from dark magic somehow.

"I don't know," she says. "I had only just learned of their existence when I arrived here. I'm afraid my knowledge is very limited."

no worries!
