Careful of the stacks - LIBRARY LOG

Who: EVERYONE!
What: A bunch of Editors walk into a library...
When: October 31st - November 13
Where: The Unfinished Library
Content warnings: Please add them as needed in the comment titles!

Welcome to the Library, Editors.

As the new residents drop into the Library, they are bound to have questions. Unfortunately it seems no one (except perhaps someone on the phone) appears to have any answers. But there is a nice little cart with a carafe of too weak coffee, a pot of too strong tea, assorted creams and sugar packets, and what appear to be leftover boxed shortbread cookies. There’s a sign inviting people to help themselves but reminding them not to take any food or drinks into the stacks, or touch any of the books with their grubby cookie hands. But aside from this little display and the nametags they’re all given, which do reappear whenever removed for the first week (where do they keep coming from?), the Editors are more or less left alone.

The Library is eternal, or at least it seems that way, unbothered by its new inhabitants. It certainly does not seem like this is anything unusual within its operation. Are there other sections of the Library with Editors, tucked into a different part of the stacks? Have there been Editors here before, and the ones here are simply a replacement? It’s impossible to say, just that the Library seems quite prepared for them. The refrigerators are stocked with appropriate (if generic) foodstuffs, any tantrums in front of the circulation desk are completely ignored, and attempts to set the Library on fire fizzle out before anything can even catch.

However, after a few days, some of the scenery in the Library seems to be changing. Little singing bowls and white noise makers pop up on various shelves and counters, yoga mats appear tucked under the bunk beds (plenty for everyone, somehow), and some of the rooms have started playing relaxing, meditative music over unseen speakers. More confusingly, there are also small UFOs hanging by string from the lower ceilings of the contained rooms, which on closer reflection are revealed to simply be two paper plates glued together and painted silver. In the beginning they’re quite sparse, but by the end of the second week they are everywhere and impossible to ignore.

At the start of the second week, there is a possible hint as to why, for at least part of it. On the table by the circulation desk there is a sign: “This Week’s Recommended Reading: Invasion of the Body Snatchers!” Next to it, there is a sign up sheet: a waitlist to check-out the ‘reading.’ (There is no explanation or apology for it actually being a movie.)

[ooc note: The Library prompts from the TDM can be considered canon to the game. Remember any of the locations listed in the setting are fair game. Have fun!]

Investigating

Scarlet, despite what some people might think, is actually quite good at being subtle. After all, she'd subtly loathed her fiance for ten years before he'd broken things off and she'd clobbered him, the new fiance, and everyone in the room. But today, that means waiting while he goes through his dialog before stepping lightly to join up and begin walking besides him before she speaks.

"Forgive me," she says with a dip of her head, "but it sounded as if you might be seeing what you can find by investigating this place. Would you care for assistance?" A small dip of her head. "Or at least company?"

Charles hadn't been expecting company- it was still a bit odd to him that he was so easily seen and noticed by others, so the stranger speaking up earns a quiet, surprised huff from him, but a smile all the same as he grins at her.

"Got it in one! And I wouldn't say no to a second set of eyes on it, absolutely!" Cheerfully, he offered a hand to shake. "Charles Rowland, of the Dead Boy Detectives. Nice to meet you!"

She will take it delicately, but Charles will notice that even if she doesn't use anything more than the most polite amount of pressure, the grip is quite solid. She nods.

"Scarlet El Vandimion of the Kingdom of Pallistan." A small smile. "My brother is the head of the Crown Investigatory Office but I'm familiar with some of the niceties."

She says, like she doesn't go on secret missions with the prince and isn't in fact a vital part of the country's security concerns.

"What is your plan, Charles? I should like to assist."

Charles doesn't seem to be trying to overpower the handshake, just accepting her grip with an easy one of his own. And if his hand was at least as cold as a corpse? Don't worry about it, he's fine!

"The authorities?" Charles can't help but chuckle playfully. "Won't hold it against you though."

He has a sense that Scarlet is a lot more involved than her comment might imply. She just has that air of competence to her that he doubts comes from being in the periphery.

"Well, we don't have a lot concrete to go on, yeah? Figured I'd try and pick at the thing we do know, see if I can't shake anything else loose that way." He plucked down one of the books that looked like an herb manual, missing every third word when it was flipped open. "None of the books here are finished."

A small huff, the book snapped shut in one hand. "And I checked- all the books in my bag, any that were complete? All gone. All that's left is half-written journals, a few manuscripts that were never finished. So I figured I'd make a log at least of the books I recognize from home, and what's missin' from em, see if a pattern crops up, yeah? If you want, we can start a list of books you know from Pallistan too, and see what we find with that. Might be a bloody goose chase, but any extra clue's gold at this point."

She grins at the joke, because she's certainly not one for going the 'official' route at all times, even if the official route is her brother or her... or a certain prince. But she's listening attentively.

"Have you spotted any books you're familiar with from your own home?" because she certainly hasn't. There have been some familiar ideas and concepts, but nothing that actually rings a bell as something she knows. And she's very well read.

"Yup!" He flipped to another page, messy with jotted notes on titles, authors, and details like 'no 'e's' or 'no illustrations (THANK GOD)' turning the page so she could see. "Found a fair few so far- but they're all missin' sommat that they aren't back home. Every other word, or half of each paragraph, illustrations... everything's unfinished."
