so good night unto you all - LIBRARY RETURN
Who: The Editors, one and all
What: The fight is over, the pieces remain... and the Editors head back 'home'
When:Dawn of the Final Day Sunrise after the attack
Where: Leaving Montica, back to the Library
Content warnings: Please make sure to put CW in headers!
By the time morning comes around again, the fires are beginning to die down, thanks to the many efforts of the citizenry to keep them under control. The rebel vampires too have been largely dealt with. These two seemingly insurmountable obstacles were only possible thanks to a combination of factors: the Umbra not being as blind to their human servants as their opposition would have thought, defectors from the Orlocks who were able to counter-act some of their magic, the following Amalia gathered and deployed from Laurelthirst, some suspicious (though welcome) help from suspiciously new arrivals, and of course, House Guildulf throwing their own into the fray to ally with the vampires for this confrontation.
A unity the likes of which Montica has never truly seen.
As the sun rises, there are few left who are able to fight at all; the rebels are beaten, and even the forces built up by both the vampires and werewolves are exhausted or diminished, leaving no one able to take advantage. Citizens of both sides flee indoors, and the remaining rebels are forced to vanish into the woods once more, weakened and unable to strike again any time soon. But there are still repairs to be done, physically and otherwise. Will this unity last beyond tonight? Will young love and youthful hope prevail? Those are the questions that settle over a weary Montica, as light pours into the city once more.
And then, the world begins to fade, static taking over the senses, as the Editors return to the Library.
Welcome back, Editors
It looks much the same as they left it, though the makings of a masquerade are no longer arranged as finely, a few scorch marks here and there, and for some reason there’s some amazing optical illusions on the floor panelling that makes them look like actual manhole covers. Alas, no sewers lay beneath. It may still take Actors a bit of time to shake off the old-new memories, and for some reason the fluorescent lighting seems harsher on the skin than it has any right too. Good thing that the stacks cast long shadows.
The customary tea cart is set up in the Lobby again, and it seems some improvements have been made. The coffee still isn’t strong, but’s far more drinkable than it has been, and there’s an added decaf option now! The tea has still been overstepped, and the stale cookies have been replaced by scones that are hard as rocks, but clearly someone’s getting the message that there are improvements needed. Clearly the tea cart was the place to start.
If someone for some reason doesn’t want stale scones, there’s also a child sized food truck in the lobby, with a sign out front boasting a variety of tamales, including: black beans and cheese, birria, chicken, fire scorpion, man suffering to death via battle wound, and beef. Upon approach, what look like fuzzy puppets pop up to… take your order? They don’t say much, or rather, they make a single noise over and over that seems to be them communicating, but the tamales are good. Just… don’t try to look in the truck. They’ll screech, vanish, and then no tamales for you.
Meanwhile, the bulletin board has a cheerful sign decorated with colorful blocks, declaring: “Join us in the Children’s Area for Lego Club!” Upon locating the room in question, Editors will discover boxes among boxes of legos of various shapes and sizes. There are some ‘how to’ guides for various builds (including a ‘research space ship’ and a ‘vampire’s castle’), but also plenty of encouragement for people to make their own creations! Unlike normal creations, these will actually stick around for a while after they’re finished, and there’s a nice little table where people can display and share what they’ve made.
The Assistants, it seems, are nowhere to be seen: the ‘back in 5’ sign is still in place at the help desk. Still, even without their ‘helpful’ guidance, some facets of the Library may come more easily to some in the aftermath of Montica’s troubles.
[Due to the resolution of the Story, any skills tagged Archivist in the skill tree cost one less skill point (minimum of 1) until the next Story. This can stack with a normal Archivist bonus!]

Re: The gardens
"Probably dark," he says, not wanting to comment on what he considers a very slim chance of being welcomed into the house of Beauforte. "My natural hair color back home is dark, and this body reflects that. Hikaru is a bottle blond."
He sighs and lies down, wings carefully folded. "I want to think that Montica will persist beyond us, that what we did was... lasting, somehow. Not a weak and idle theme, no more yielding than a dream."
Siobhan may recognize A Midsummer Night's Dream. Thorne almost certianly would.
"Have I ever talked to you about World as Myth?"
Re: The gardens
"That would explain it, yes," Siobhan says, blushing a little as she thinks of what else is black-haired on Hikaru's body. She closes her eyes for a moment, since Thorne.tcai has certainly come to attention at the back of her mind for that.
"My lady says that she knows of it, that her 'Abuelito' had a fondness for someone named Heinlein and his contemporaries. She likes to use Yberian terms for the part of her family that isn't gods," she adds, in explanation. "She says that she knows what you're talking about and she thinks it's right—what is this World as Myth?"
Re: The gardens
Dr. Durante was not shy about her heritage and how it informed Yberia.
“Heinlein beleived that all stories, all fiction, is a reflection of a deeper reality - a glimpse into a true universe that exists, somewhere in a multiverse,” he says. “Made true in the telling, in the emotional weight of scenes, in the loving attention to sensory detail. This place, these worlds as Stories…”
He looks into a pair of very blue eyes.
“I want to think there is a world Durante and the others glimpsed where you chose in truth all that makes you you, where you were always Awake. That there is a true Akane Masamiko, a true Princess Cherry, a true Roland Deschain and Jake Chambers and Susannah Dean and Edward Cantor. Did you know,” he says, seizing on this last, “what Stephen King said in the foreword to The Dark Tower, the final book?”
Re: The gardens
"It's been months since my lady read the book to me," Siobhan murmurs. "Remind me?"
A true Princess Sigrid, Prince Edmund and Herr Konrad—a true Margrave Sigrun. Oh, she wishes so very badly for a world where her mother truly had lived.
(Greedily, she wishes this world also has Hikaru and Deedee and their friends, because it is hard to imagine life without them.)
Re: The gardens
He doffs his hat.
“As Masamiko and Junko saved me from a lifetime condemned to being Michiko. And the tutelage of Roland - and your Prince, among others - taught me how to wear the mantle Scherzo would place on my shoulders.”
He covers his grinning with his hand.
“There is a reason that Azuresky - I would have used ‘Cielazul’ if being transparent to the Readers wasn’t the point - and his Gallentaise accent sprung to my mind as an alias.”
Re: The gardens
"They helped save me too, you know. My lady read them to me when I was lonely and despondent on the road, knowing how all of my life was only a story, in order to remind me that just because I was a character in a story didn't mean I couldn't reach outside that story to help everyone."
She strokes his cheek.
"I can see it. How you have taken all the men you so admire and used their lessons to be the wonderful man who you are." Another warm laugh. "And I think Edmund would find you very admirable, as learned and handsome as you are, my light. I have wanted to bring you to him ever since I met you, although at the beginning it was merely so you could teach him your engineering."
Re: The gardens
He pauses.
“That Deedee will neither confirm nor deny she did copyediting for.”
Re: The gardens
She kisses his cheek again.
"I had been thinking that after your mission and my mission in Vinyedo were done that I would ask permission of the Contessa to take you—all of you—back north with me. I am ready to make what concessions I need to, though I hope I will not be to make many."
Re: The gardens
He shakes his head.
“Well. And on the gripping hand, Duncan encouraged me to take up Laina’s quill again, as it were. Perhaps I’ll write about a poor stranded Sigrid cosplayer we met on the Shores, or the Endurance visiting Planet Greenhaven, or a weekend at Oceanfes.”
Re: The gardens
"The Sigrid cosplayer needs to have an Edmund who was left behind on Earth," Siobhan suggests. "One who she was seeing behind her father's back and that she misses very much, but she doesn't know that there was meant to be passage between Earth and Mundus and thinks she will be stuck on Mundus forever, so it's all right if she lets herself fall in love with the handsome and tall older wizard who she fell in with on the Shores of Awakening."
Hey, Hikaru, remember when you first met her and she implied that this was actually the case? The having cosplay partners still on Earth part, anyway.
