for all the world's a stage - LIBRARY LOG

Who: The Editors
What: The Library changes once again...
When: January 9- January 22
Where: The Library
Content warnings: Please put them in the comment headers!

The Assistants have vanished into their backroom once again, leaving only the increasingly unbelievable “Back In 5” sign on the Help Desk, but at least they have attempted to impart some knowledge on the Editors before departing (or… attempted to do anything but, depending who you ask). The customary tea cart with drinks and increasingly stale biscuits is parked in its usual spot, though it seems that the quality of the tea at least has improved some. (Still waiting on coffee improvement.)

There’s a new crafting setup in the Maker Space, a table with an iron and machine for making vinyl designs, along with the instructions on how to use it, and a stack of t-shirts in various sizes. Usually there’s something in the correct size, but, well, mistakes happen. While this addition to clothing is a boon, there is the problem that the t-shirts can’t be taken out of the room until some sort of design is put on them. Get creative! Show off your style! Or maybe just steal one of the shirts that are there for display purposes. It’s fine, the Library can make more.

In the second week as the Library begins to change once more, the Lobby’s wooden floor shines with extra polish. The walls make an odd creaking sound as they shift, warping into brick covered with velvet drapings in a rich, dark red. Gold thread twinkles in the stitches, a sense of opulence woven through. The sound of ballroom music drifts by and, while in the Lobby, characters will be taken by the unusual impulse to dance.

Outside, in the Garden, the day/night cycle has paused firmly on a cloudless night. A full moon hangs in the air - literally. About the size of a basketball, it follows the first person who enters the Garden; hovering a couple of meters above their head. A white aura spreads from them, powered by the moon, and those who are caught in its light will find themselves unable to speak anything but the truth.

When the person to whom the moon is attached leaves the garden, the moon and its aura will leave them; and the moon will attach to the next person to enter instead.

On the circulation desk, there is a sign: “This Week’s Recommended Reading: Twilight!” The accompanying sign up sheet waits next to it for those wishing to check it out- though some will receive the movie instead of the book, with no particular rhyme or reason to it. Periodically someone might also receive something else entirely. Whoops? The Assistants at least will fix that quickly. Richard will be embarrassed, while Phillip will be trying not to cackle.

While not advertised, various iterations of different stories will be available throughout the Library. In particular, someone seems to have left the projector in one of the meeting rooms running, with a variety of different recorded plays. These range from professional productions, to parodies, to what appear to be high schoolers (of which one production features a sixteen year old version of Phillip running around being an absolutely nuisance.

Carefully, they put their books down and utterly untroubled, kneel beside the body and move to check for a pulse or signs of ab-life.

"And what do you think it looks like?" Hmm, doesn't look like the stiff is coming back. How long have they been dead?

"I didn't kill anyone!" Well, not this time, at least. His actual kill count is impressive, but trust him, they were all very bad people!

Don't notice the fangs, or the sword or anything.

Lu hums thoughtfully and then looks from Sanguinis to the body and then back again. They stay kneeling by the corpse, one hand on its chest. "Alright."

Sure. Why not. They're collectively in an interdimensional library.

"Where or how did the body come from?"

"I swear, I don't even know who this is!" Like that somehow makes it better? It's not killing if it's a random person?

"It, er, it came from this book." Which was the autobiography of SGM Mike Vining. .

"It's alright, dear, first time for everything." Lu stands, brushes their hands together and casts a quick cleaning cantrip before patting Sanguinis' arm reassuringly. "Not everyone is used to the dead."

"Given that we likely fell into the place through some similar sort of portal, it's not surprising that the forces accidentally nabbed a dead one."

Assuming he allows it, they'll pick up the book and start skimming over the text. "We should probably report it, or at least find a suitable spot to dispose of it. You've been here longer than I have, what's the usual method?"

He could just be quiet about it, and let them think that, sure, it was just a random accident, something that happens here. Bodies just appearing. But he has honor and integrity and...just can't.

"It's my fault. I brought it here." There, he said it. Sort of. "There is no usual method." For once in his life Sanguinius wasn't perfect at something he tried. THE HORROR.

"Probably not intentionally, hmm?" Another pat-pat. You see? Even though they are not very good at it, this is an attempt to be comforting.

So, pat-pat.

"Walk me through the process of what happened. What you intended to occur and then what you did." With a wave, they camouflage the body - it won't hold up to even the slightest scrutiny, but Lu suspects that Sanguinis is eager to pretend that it's not there. "It's a summoning, yes, but hardly a dangerous one. You're fine, I'm fine, and it was already dead."

Experience has taught them not to say what they are thinking: it could have been a dead dog, a bushel of apples, or any other organic matter. Best that it came through already dead and not inside out and alive.

"Not...intentionally like this." Because this was distressing. This could cause the whole thing to collapse, his entire Legion endangered.

"It was a mistake. I was trying to use the Resource sorcery and it went awry." He just wanted the blood. Well, wanted was a bit mild.

"I ...think I need to explain myself more clearly. In my experience, there are three primary forms of magic: through learning and the application of will, through innate magical power, or through bargaining with greater powers. I think that this is a case of the first being confused for the second or vice versa." Illumination rifles through their bag and pulls out a small square of cloth and begins to 'knead' it. It takes time, but as they talk, it starts to increase in size.

"When I say that you need to tell me the steps you did, I mean that I want enough detail to understand what you were trying to do. Why this book? What preparation, if any, did you do before you read? Did you gather supplies? Did the 'resource' just appear? Or do you need to pull it from a portal?"

With a full sized shroud in hand, Lu spreads it out on the floor beside the semi-hidden body before putting their staff aside, grabbing the feet, and starting to roll the corpse onto the fabric.

"We're lucky that this was a small error. No one cares about a dead body when it could have been live rats, a sickness, or some other nasty, truly dangerous thing." Heave-ho and rolling into place, wrapped up like a burrito. "I'm happy to teach you how to build and set wards, to prevent further incursion, but I need details about what you're doing."

A pause as they cock their head and consider. "Or find someone else that you'd rather work with. I'm not bothered either way."

"I did what the Assistant Librarians taught me to do." Look, they're not excited about getting him blood, so he figured the decent thing to do was get his own. It's called MANNERS?

He holds up a cup stolen from the kitchen. "I brought this." Preparations? he did them! Because sometimes the blood didn't come in a tidy package. "I selected this book because I thought it would have the best chance of having what I needed." A war memoir probably has blood in it, right? Flawless. Plus, it was good to read about war and tactics fought by others. There was always something to learn.

"Others will think that I did this, though." Which he did, in a sense. He pulled the body out. He just didn't do all the...stabbing? "I would be glad for any council you have to avoid a repetition of this." For reasons that are obvious and have left a puddle on the floor, despite the shroud.

"Are you afraid that they'll think you killed a man or that you brought in a dead body? Because, darling, we're already all in a strange place where strange people appear." Knotting the sheet at the bottom, and then again at the top; it's a little messy, but it'll be the easiest way to haul the body.

"They didn't teach you very well, did they?" Huff! "You're stronger than I am, so let's drag the consequences of their improper pedagogy to their front desk."
